One of our clients is seeking a passionate and experienced Head Gardener to oversee and enhance the horticultural standards of their prestigious, large, private estate in South Africa. This is a unique opportunity for a talented individual to manage and develop a diverse landscape, blending aesthetic beauty with sustainability and best practices in horticulture.
Key Responsibilities:
- Leading and supervising a team of 8-10 gardeners and grounds staff
- Designing, planting, and maintaining formal and informal landscapes
- Managing plant health, pest/disease control, soil nutrition, irrigation and seasonal planning
- Budgeting, sourcing materials and liaising with suppliers
- Ensuring machinery and tools are maintained and safely used
- Working with the principals to align garden vision with long-term goals
Ideal Candidate: - Must have knowledge, or be able to adapt to, a Waterwise Irrigation method and indigenous garden. This is an essential requirement.
- Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience in a professional gardening or horticultural setting
- Formal training or qualification in horticulture (preferred but not essential)
- Strong leadership and organisational skills
- Excellent knowledge of plants, soils, pruning, pests and landscaping techniques
- Physically fit, enthusiastic and able to work in all weather conditions
- Experience in South African flora and climate
- South African nationality/passport is essential and non-negotiable.
